{"id":14981,"date":"2023-03-21T15:56:59","date_gmt":"2023-03-21T15:56:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.5gworldpro.com\/?p=14981"},"modified":"2023-03-21T15:56:59","modified_gmt":"2023-03-21T15:56:59","slug":"nef-services-and-slicing-impacts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.5gworldpro.com\/blog\/2023\/03\/21\/nef-services-and-slicing-impacts\/","title":{"rendered":"NEF services and slicing impacts"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"tt_1\" class=\"t s4_1\">\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.5gworldpro.com\/blog\/2019\/04\/12\/46-3gpp-5g-specifications\/\">Network<\/a> Exposure Function (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.5gworldpro.com\/blog\/2021\/10\/21\/deutsche-telekom-and-ericsson-perform-a-trial-of-slice-specific-nef-for-video-production\/\">NEF<\/a>) in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.5gworldpro.com\/blog\/2020\/02\/22\/183-what-is-the-dynamic-spectrum-sharing\/\">5G<\/a> inherits from the SCEF (Service Capability Exposure Function) in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.5gworldpro.com\/blog\/2022\/03\/20\/5g-smartphone-sales-globally-overtake-4g-sales-in-jan-2022\/\">4G<\/a> and encompasses many functionnalities among which :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>exposure at NFs, in particular AFs, of capabilities or events occurring at other NFs;<\/li>\n<li>exposure at NFs, in particular AFs, of capabilities or events occurring at other NFs;<\/li>\n<li>provisioning of information coming from AFs to NFs in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.5gworldpro.com\/blog\/2021\/03\/20\/5g-qos-management-and-comparison-with-4g-qos\/\">5GC<\/a> e.g. Expected UE Behaviour, 5GLAN group information and service specific information;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>support for analytics exposure i.e. NWDAF analytics possibly exposed by NEF for external parties AFs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These functionalities are expressed in terms of NEF services.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>NEF services and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.5gworldpro.com\/blog\/2021\/04\/12\/5g-slicing-ecosystem-and-industry-cooperation\/\">slicing<\/a> impacts :<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The majority of NEF services are not impacted by slicing aspects introduced in 5G typically because they relate to the UE itself independently of the slice (S-NSSAI) the UE is using e.g. Nnef_Location.<\/li>\n<li>Some NEF services indirectly relate to slicing information because they relate to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.5gworldpro.com\/5g-knowledge\/what-is-pdu-session-in-5g.html\">PDU<\/a> session(s) and a PDU session is activated for a (S-NSSAI, DNN) combination. This is the case for NEF services related to Non-IP Data Delivery (NIDD), i.e. NIDD Nnef_SMContext, Nnef_NIDD and Nnef_NIDDConfiguration.<\/li>\n<li>Some NEF services also indirectly relate to slicing information because they relate to application(s) and an application can be identified by a (S-NSSAI, DNN) combination in 5G (although other means are also possible) This is the case for Nnef_ServiceParameter, Nnef_TrafficInfluence and Nnef_ServiceParameter;<\/li>\n<li>NEF_Parameter_Provision allows an AF to configure parameters in the UDM for a (S-NSSAI, DNN) combination for managing 5G VN groups;<\/li>\n<li>Some NEF services relate to slicing e.g. Nnef_AnalyticsExposure because it\u2019s possible for an AF to obtain network analytics information related to a specific slice type, i.e. a filter is possible in the subscription request sent to the NEF. For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.5gworldpro.com\/leap-2023\/\">event<\/a> exposure and analytics exposure, when the filter on S-NSSAI is not possible, the deployment of a NEF dedicated to a slice allows the AF to obtain notifications of the events in the slice, which is applicablewhen a slice is dedicated to an NPN (Non-Public Network), i.e. PNI-NPN.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>NEF deployment and slicing impacts :<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.5gworldpro.com\/blog\/2021\/08\/08\/o-ran-3gpp-vs-o-ran-alliance\/\">3GPP<\/a> specifications make no assumption on NEF deployment in the PLMN and the operator can deploy the NEF per type of NEF service and\/or per slice type.<\/li>\n<li>NEF centralization allows saving OPEX\/CAPEX with a limited number of NEF(s) in the PLMN and also saving signalling for subscriptions at the NEF and from the NEF towards the other NFs in the PLMN.<\/li>\n<li>NEF distribution avoids tromboning effects in the control plane for services such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.5gworldpro.com\/blog\/2021\/06\/10\/dell-wants-to-be-a-key-partner-to-telcos-for-open-ran-deployments\/\">edge<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.5gworldpro.com\/blog\/2021\/11\/14\/what-is-multi-access-edge-computing-mec\/\">computing<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.5gworldpro.com\/glossary\/urllc-ultra-reliable-low-latency-communications\/\">URLLC<\/a> services where AFs are supposed to be distributed: NEF may be deployed close to AFs.<\/li>\n<li>NEF distribution is also a solution to provide event exposure and network analytics exposure to an AF on a dedicated slice when the subscription to such events per slice type is not possible in the standard.<\/li>\n<li>Implementing one or a few centralized NEF(s) and more distributed NEFs in the PLMN is the most realistic situation to manage the above cases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Network Exposure Function (NEF) in 5G inherits from the SCEF (Service Capability Exposure Function) in 4G and encompasses many functionnalities among which : exposure at NFs, in particular AFs, of capabilities or events occurring at other NFs; exposure at NFs, in particular AFs, of capabilities or events occurring at other NFs; provisioning of information [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":14983,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"tdm_status":"","tdm_grid_status":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v21.0 (Yoast SEO v22.2) -
