What is Mobile Edge Computing in 5G?

My friend: Hi Ibrahim, I have a question for you.

Me: Please, go ahead.

My friend: What is meant by MEC?

Me: MEC (Multi-Access Edge Computing) is a technique to allow a UE to access services which are hosted close to the serving base station and so it brings application hosting from centralized data centers down to the network edge to be closer to consumers. So, we achieve an efficient service delivery through the lower end-to-end latency and the reduced load on the transport network.

My friend: But, how this is implemented?

Me: Actually, this is done thanks to CUPS (control and user plane separation) as now we have separate nodes for control plane and user plane, so simply the user plane functions (UPF) can be moved to the network edge or even at the radio site, also it can also be placed at enterprise premises, for example inside factory buildings, in homes and vehicles, including trains, planes and private cars. By the way, MEC can be done without 5G architecture as CUPS concept introduced by 3GPP Rel-14.

My friend: Thanks a lot. It is clear for me now.

Me: You are welcome.

Please share arround you to clear it for everyone, and have a look to our last articles
