Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and Telefonica Germany are expanding their mobile networks to improve coverage in stadiums, public viewing areas and training camps during the Euro 2024 men’s football competition from 14 June to 14 July. Vodafone is carrying out 650 construction projects at 50 sites. It will lead works to improve network capacity in the stadiums in Gelsenkirchen, Cologne and Leipzig.
Telefonica will instal 4G and 5G sites using mobile radio trailers. Deutsche Telekom has installed around 750 new 5G antennas in stadiums, including 300 supplying mobile coverage in spectator stands, and around 450 in indoor areas such as stadium tunnels and media areas. Telekom is also installing 38 portable sites for fan zones, railways stations and training camps for national teams. It is laying 65 km of fibre-optic network and installing over 2,000 signal distributors (switches) and connection points for WLAN and cables to arenas.
The operators rely on 3.6 GHz frequency bands for fast transmission. This frequency is used in nine out of ten stadiums. In addition, Telekom uses 900 MHz frequency bands, and 1.8 GHz, 2.1 GHz and 2.6 GHz bands for 5G and LTE data transmission. The technology used to expand the network during Euro 2024 will remains in the stadiums after the tournament, to provide mobile coverage during league games.
