EE Launches Standalone 5G Network and Wi-Fi 7 to Redefine UK Connectivity

EE has launched its groundbreaking standalone 5G network, coupled with a next-generation Wi-Fi 7 offering, marking a major leap in UK connectivity. CEO Marc Allera emphasized that these advancements will unlock new AI capabilities and integrate mobile and fixed technologies, setting a new standard for in-and-out-of-home connectivity.

Standalone 5G: A New Era of Mobile Performance

EE’s standalone 5G network, live across 15 major UK cities, is part of a new set of pay-monthly plans offering unlimited data, enhanced network features, and exclusive access to Google Gemini AI tools. This network is the UK’s first to deliver seamless outdoor coverage, improving call quality and boosting gaming and streaming performance.

Powered by cutting-edge AI technology, the network uses automation for increased reliability and machine learning to manage demand efficiently. Allera highlighted the upcoming surge in AI-compatible devices, stating, “AI is driving a new wave of upgrades, and our network is ready to meet these demands.”

The launch also signals EE’s commitment to future innovations, with plans to introduce 5G Advanced and slicing services to enhance customer experiences further.

Next-Gen Wi-Fi 7: Elevating Home Connectivity

EE’s new Wi-Fi 7 Smart Hub Pro and Smart Wi-Fi Pro routers, developed with Qualcomm, aim to address the rising needs of connected homes, improving cloud gaming, AR/VR, and 4K/8K video streaming. With speeds reaching up to 100Mb/s, these routers offer unmatched performance and reliability, uniting mobile and broadband services into one seamless experience.

Allera noted that integrating mobile and broadband connections is crucial for EE’s strategy, stating, “Our goal is to bring these connections together for superior customer experiences.”

A Calculated Launch Amidst Competition

EE’s launch comes after similar moves by Vodafone UK and VMO2, which introduced standalone 5G in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Howard Watson, BT’s Chief Technology and Information Officer, explained that while EE took its time, the goal was to ensure the best possible performance, particularly as the device ecosystem matured to support standalone technology.

Kester Mann from CCS Insight praised EE’s strategy, noting that launching with widespread coverage sets the groundwork for future innovations. However, he raised concerns about the sustainability of premium charges for standalone 5G as rivals offer similar services at no additional cost.

With these bold steps, EE is redefining connectivity in the UK, setting the stage for an AI-driven future where mobile and fixed networks work harmoniously to meet evolving customer needs.
